Jon Daniels shared with us last night in Refresh how we can hear God speak to us when we spend time in His word, not by just reading verses but by having a desire to hear from Him and being intentional when reading His word. So I decided to read this morning’s Read, Pray, Obey verse (Romans 11:33) with this in mind.
Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
At first, the 2 sentences seem somewhat contradictory to me. If He is unsearchable (unable to be clearly understood) and inscrutable (impossible to understand or interpret), how can I know Him? But if I read this believing that God wants to teach me something important I begin to see it.
God is bigger than us individually and collectively. He spoke EVERYTHING into existence. We have to enter into this pursuit of God knowing that we will never be able to completely understand Him or His ways, BUT that should not deter us from pursuing Him because we will receive His God given riches (don’t think money here) and wisdom along the way. Being God, He could force us to spend time with Him, but he doesn’t. That’s our choice to make, but isn’t it great that He desires that relationship with us.
Now turn that into a conversation (a prayer):
God, help me to take a step back from everything in my life and remember how big your are; that you spoke and everything became. With that truth in mind, I understand that I will never be able to know you completely, but your word tells me of the great riches and wisdom that you have for me if I would only pursue you. Help me to be a man that pursues you and what you have to offer instead of the world and its empty promises. In Jesus name, Amen.
